Diana’s funeral was on the 6th of September 1997. More than
one million people came to London and many more watched the funeral on
television. Prince William and Prince Harry walked behind Diana’s coffin-the
box where her body was. Diana’s favourite white flowers were on top of the
coffin. Prince Harry, who was only twelve years old, wrote one word on a card.
The word was ‘Mummy’. This card was on the coffin too. The coffin went from
Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey for the funeral. Thousands of people
stood quietly by the road. Many people cried. Famous people from all over the
world came to the funeral service a and there were many people from Diana’s
charities. Elton John sang a beautiful song, ‘Candle in the Wind’. He first
wrote it for Marilyn Monroe but wrote new words for Diana. Diana and Marilyn
Monroe died at exactly the same age-thirty-six.
After the funeral, the coffin
went very slowly to Althorp, the Spencer family home. People in the streets of
London threw flowers. At Althorp, Charles Spencer said, ‘Diana is home’.
